Guaranteed Financial Support for Pharmacy Graduate Students

The School of Pharmacy guarantees financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantships (TA) and Research Studentships (RS).

The support is normally offered until the student's program time limit is reached.

School policy defines a mandatory minimum level of financial support for all students in good standing and within program time limits.

The minimum is designed to meet the needs of single students who pay domestic tuition fees and have no exceptional expenses; it is reviewed periodically by the School.

Teaching Assistantships (TA)

Graduate students in the School of Pharmacy normally assist in demonstrating laboratories or otherwise help in the undergraduate instructional program. In return for this, graduate students receive “TA” support which normally comprises a substantial portion of the students’ annual income. Students are eligible for one Full 10-hour TA (2 units) and one Half 5-hour TA (1 unit) per year. M.Sc. students are eligible for no more than 6 units during their program.  Students usually TA 2 out of 3 terms and are not permitted to do more than two TA terms in a row. As of May 2008, a full TA (10 hours per week) is $810 per month ($3240 per term), and a half TA (5 hours per week) is $405 per month ($1620 per term). Vacation pay of 4% is calculated per term. Graduate students who are beyond their normal program limits or have reached the maximum number of TAs for their program may choose to TA as an “other” for which they will be paid at the standard TA rate, approved by the University. Before accepting a TA position, please be sure that you have your supervisor’s approval.

As of September 2007, students who agree to TA will receive the Science Graduate Experience Award (SGEA). As per UW policy, the award appears as “anticipated aid” in your Quest account. Students must use a promissory note and their Quest account printout to apply this amount directly to their tuition. Students with a Half TA (1 unit) receive $900 and students with a Full TA (2 units) receive $1800. This amount is reviewed annually by the Department.

Science Graduate Experience Award (SGEA)

The Science Graduate Experience Award is awarded by the School of Pharmacy for experience acquired by graduate students as a Teaching Assistant (TA).Students who agree to TA for 5 hours a week receive $900, and students who AT 10 hours per week receive $1800 - up to a yearly maximum of $2700. Eligibility requirements are the same as for departmental Teaching Assistantships and may include factors such as the total number of TA units available and/or total number of terms registered in the program.

International Master's Student Award (IMSA)

Full-time international students starting a research-based master's program will receive an International Master's Student Award (IMSA) valued at $1,640 per term (the value is approximate to one-half of the differential fee per term) for 2 years (up to term 6.0). Students who are receiving major external awards or sponsorship are not eligible to receive this award.

Continuation of Financial Support

Students are normally supported until the end of their program time limit. However, university policy guidelines state “A student whose performance is judged to be unsatisfactory will normally receive written warning and suggestions for improvement. If the student's performance does not improve sufficiently within a reasonable period of time, financial support may be reduced or discontinued. Written warning and an opportunity need not be given in cases of serious misconduct or serious neglect of duties”.
